Called them for an issue with one of the refrigerators at our restaurant. They showed up on time, found the problem, and got it taken care of without trying to sell us anything we didn’t need. Would definitely use them again.

The Service Call

A Fort Myers restaurant contacted us after the kitchen staff noticed that the top of one of their commercial refrigerators had become unusually hot.

The refrigerator was still holding temperature, there were no error codes, and the compressor was running. Because the cabinet was cold, the staff initially assumed the extra heat was normal in a busy Florida kitchen.

I did not want to wait for the refrigerator to stop cooling before checking it.

What I Found

I started by checking cabinet temperature, condenser airflow, compressor operation, electrical connections, and fan amperage.

The compressor was running normally, but the condenser fan was not.

It would start, run for a short time, slow down, and eventually stop. When that happened, the condenser could no longer reject heat efficiently.

That heat stayed around the compressor and condenser coil, forcing the refrigeration system to work harder to maintain the same cabinet temperature.

This is why the refrigerator could still feel cold while a real mechanical problem was developing.

The Repair

I replaced the failing condenser fan motor and cleaned grease and dust from the condenser coil.

I also inspected the fan wiring and electrical connections and checked compressor amperage before running the refrigerator through several complete cooling cycles.

With steady airflow restored, heat moved away from the condenser properly. The compressor temperature stabilized, the refrigerator maintained its setpoint, and the system returned to a normal cycle.

Warning Signs to Watch For

A commercial refrigerator may have a condenser or airflow problem if you notice:

  • Unusual heat around the compressor or condensing unit
  • Compressor running longer than it used to
  • Condenser fan starting and stopping
  • A new humming or rattling sound
  • Slower temperature recovery after the door opens
  • Higher energy use without a change in workload

One important point: do not judge the system only by the temperature display.

A refrigerator can still hold temperature while the compressor is being exposed to excessive heat.

Why Early Repair Matters

The condenser's job is to release heat from the refrigeration system.

When airflow is lost, operating pressure and compressor temperature can increase. The refrigerator may continue cooling for a while, but the extra strain can eventually lead to a more expensive breakdown.

Catching a weak condenser fan early is much better than waiting for the compressor to shut down during service.
